The Psychology of Teaching Musical Instruments

The special object of this book is to point out psychological connections and to offer suggestions for day-to-day work that will help students to feel at home with their instrument.
The first section of this pragmatic introduction deals with the “Personality of the Learner” and his or her general attitude towards music. Typical patterns of behaviour are discussed with the goal of aligning lessons on the pupil.
The second section, “Learning and Understanding”, presents learning levels and various types of instruction and applies them directly to instrument lessons.
The third section focuses on that critical factor, motivation. After describing the psychological basis of motivation, the author presents a practical guide for teachers: the “Motivation Circle”. Finally, the book ends with a “Lesson Checklist”, a set of criteria drawn from the three preceding topics that allows teachers to tailor their lessons optimally to the needs of their pupils.
